There is a particular kind of green that only tea plantations seem to produce, and Sabah has its own version in the highlands near Ranau. Many travellers drive past on the way to Kinabalu Park without stopping, yet the Sabah Tea Garden area is one of the most photogenic spots on the west coast side of the state, and it is much quieter than a famous landmark.
The charm lies in the pattern. Neat rows of tea bushes curve across the hillside like a living contour map, and on cooler mornings mist drifts between them. Standing at the edge of a row, with the hill rolling behind you, gives a calm, layered picture. Use a longer lens or portrait mode to compress the rows and create a sense of depth, and try a low angle that shows the leaves in the foreground and the slope behind.
Light matters more here than almost anywhere. Early morning offers soft, diffused light, the best time for gentle skin tones and gentle colour. Mid-morning often brings fog lifting off the ridges, which adds atmosphere. Harsh midday sun flattens the greens, so use that time for a tea break or a short walk instead. Late afternoon can be lovely too, although clouds can roll in quickly, so keep a rain cover handy.
For outfits, aim for contrast and comfort. Neutral tones such as cream, beige and soft brown sit nicely against the greens, while a rich burgundy, mustard or dusty pink adds a pop without clashing. Midi dresses, wide-leg trousers and knit cardigans are practical for cool air. A light trench or denim jacket works well, and a straw hat or beret completes the look. Because the paths can be damp, choose sneakers or ankle boots with grip over white shoes you want to keep spotless.
Highland weather can change within minutes, so pack a compact umbrella and a light layer even if the morning looks clear. Bring insect repellent for the shaded areas and a power bank, since cool temperatures drain phone batteries faster. If you plan to visit a tea shop or tasting area, ask about opening hours in advance.
Be considerate of the people who work the land. Stay on paths, never step into the tea rows for a photo unless told it is allowed, and do not pick leaves. A small purchase from a local seller helps support the community that keeps the scenery alive.
One more tip for travellers who plan outfits carefully: test your looks at home first. Walk in your shoes, move in your clothes and check how fabrics behave in wind and humidity. Take a test photo outdoors to see how colours read in daylight. Fixing a problem on your own doorstep is far easier than discovering it in the middle of a hillside, with rain on the way.
Quick Photo and OOTD Checklist
- Go early for mist and soft light.
- Wear layers and shoes with grip for damp ground.
- Choose neutral tones with one bold accent colour.
- Stay on paths and never trample the tea rows.
A morning here feels slow in the best way. Pair it with Kinabalu Park or the Poring area, and you have a highland day that is as good for your camera as it is for your mood.
