Understanding the Exposure Triangle

The three settings that decide every photo you'll ever take — and how they work together.
If there's one concept that unlocks the rest of photography, it's this one. Learn the exposure triangle properly, and every setting on your camera stops feeling like a mystery button and starts feeling like a lever you're pulling on purpose. Skip it, and you'll spend years shooting on Auto, wondering why your photos never quite look like the ones you admire.

The good news: it's genuinely not complicated. It just requires understanding three settings and how they trade off against each other.

What the Exposure Triangle Actually Is

Every photograph is the result of light hitting your camera's sensor. Too little light, and the photo is dark (underexposed). Too much, and it's washed out (overexposed). 

The exposure triangle refers to the three settings that control exactly how much light reaches the sensor, and each one has a creative side-effect beyond just brightness:
Aperture — the size of the opening in your lens, measured in f-stops (like f/2.8 or f/11). Controls light and depth of field (how much of the scene is in focus).

Shutter speed — how long the sensor is exposed to light, measured in fractions of a second (like 1/500s) or full seconds. Controls light and motion blur.
ISO — how sensitive the sensor is to the light it receives. Controls brightness and image noise/grain.

The "triangle" metaphor exists because these three settings are interdependent. Change one, and to keep the same overall exposure, you typically need to adjust one or both of the others. This interdependence is exactly why the concept trips beginners up — and exactly why, once it clicks, everything else in photography gets easier.

Aperture: The Eye of Your Lens


Think of your lens aperture like the iris of an eye — it dilates in dim light to let more in, and constricts in bright light to let less in. Aperture is measured in f-stops: f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, and so on.

Here's the counterintuitive part beginners always trip on: a smaller f-number means a larger opening, letting in more light. f/1.8 is a wide-open aperture that floods the sensor with light. f/16 is a small, narrow opening that lets in comparatively little.

Aperture's second job is controlling depth of field — how much of your photo, front to back, appears in sharp focus. A wide aperture (f/1.8) creates a shallow depth of field, blurring the background beautifully behind a sharp subject — ideal for portraits. A narrow aperture (f/11 or smaller) keeps far more of the scene in focus, which is why landscape photographers favour it.

Shutter Speed: Freezing or Embracing Motion

Shutter speed determines how long your camera's sensor "sees" the scene before the shutter closes again. A fast shutter speed (1/1000s) freezes motion — a bird mid-flight, a splash of water, a runner's legs mid-stride. A slow shutter speed (1/15s or slower) allows motion to blur across the frame, which can either ruin a shot (camera shake, an accidentally blurry subject) or become an intentional creative tool (silky waterfalls, light trails from traffic at night, a sense of motion in a busy street).
Like aperture, shutter speed has a dual role: it controls exposure (longer exposure = more light reaches the sensor) and it controls how motion is rendered. There's also a practical handholding limit — below a certain shutter speed, camera shake from your own hands starts to blur the whole image, not just moving subjects. A rough rule of thumb: don't handhold slower than roughly 1/(your focal length) of a second unless you have image stabilisation or are deliberately going for blur.

ISO: Your Sensor's Sensitivity Dial

ISO measures how sensitive your camera's sensor is to the light hitting it. A low ISO (like 100) requires more actual light to produce a well-exposed image but produces the cleanest, most detailed result. A high ISO (like 3200 or 6400) allows you to shoot in much darker conditions, but at a cost — visible grain or "noise" creeps into the image, along with reduced dynamic range and colour accuracy.
Modern cameras, especially mirrorless models, have gotten remarkably good at high-ISO performance, but the fundamental trade-off never disappears entirely. The rule of thumb: use the lowest ISO that still lets you achieve the shutter speed and aperture you need for the shot. ISO is the setting you adjust last, after you've decided your creative priorities for aperture and shutter speed.

How the Three Interact: The Concept of "Stops"

Photographers talk about exposure in terms of "stops" — a stop is a doubling or halving of light. Each of the three settings has stop increments:
Aperture: f/1.4 → f/2 → f/2.8 → f/4 → f/5.6 → f/8 → f/11 → f/16 (each step lets in half the light of the previous one)
Shutter speed: 1/1000 → 1/500 → 1/250 → 1/125 → 1/60 → 1/30 (each step doubles the exposure time and the light captured)
ISO: 100 → 200 → 400 → 800 → 1600 → 3200 (each step doubles sensitivity)
Because all three are measured in the same currency of "stops," you can trade them against each other freely. If you increase your shutter speed by one stop (letting in half as much light, to freeze motion better), you can compensate by opening your aperture one stop wider, or doubling your ISO — or splitting the difference across both.

Worked Example: Equivalent Exposures

Say your camera meters a scene correctly at f/8, 1/250s, ISO 400. All of these settings produce the same overall exposure, just with different creative trade-offs:

None of these is "correct" in isolation — the right combination depends entirely on what you're photographing and what you want the photo to feel like.
Choosing Your Priority Based on the Scene
In practice, you rarely juggle all three settings with equal weight. Instead, decide which one matters most for the specific shot, set that first, and let the others follow:
Photographing a portrait? Prioritise aperture — you likely want a wide aperture for background blur.
Photographing sports, wildlife, or kids running around? Prioritise shutter speed — you need it fast enough to freeze motion.
Photographing in a dim restaurant or at a night market? Prioritise ISO — you'll likely need to raise it to keep both aperture and shutter speed usable.
Photographing a landscape at Bukit Larut or the hills around Taiping? Prioritise aperture again, but this time for the opposite reason — a narrow aperture to keep the whole scene sharp.

A Simple Practice Exercise

Set your camera to Manual mode and pick one static subject — a plant, a cup, anything that isn't moving. Take five photos, each using a different combination of settings that should, in theory, produce the same overall brightness (use the worked example table above as a template). Compare the results side by side. You'll see the exposure staying roughly consistent while depth of field, motion blur, and noise all visibly shift. This single exercise does more to cement the exposure triangle than any amount of reading.

Common Misconceptions

"A higher ISO always ruins a photo." Not true — a slightly noisy photo you actually captured beats a perfectly clean photo that's blurred beyond use because your shutter speed was too slow.
"Manual mode is the only way to really control exposure." Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority still let you control the setting that matters most for a given shot, while the camera handles the rest — perfectly valid, especially in fast-changing conditions.
"The exposure triangle is only for 'technical' photographers." Every photo you've ever admired, no matter how candid or spontaneous it looks, was shaped by these three decisions, whether the photographer made them manually or a camera's automation made them on their behalf.

Bringing It All Together

The exposure triangle isn't a rule to memorise — it's a relationship to internalise. Aperture shapes your depth of field. Shutter speed shapes motion. ISO shapes how much light-gathering flexibility you have in dark conditions. All three trade off against each other in predictable, learnable ways.
Once this framework sits comfortably in your head, every other technical concept in photography — from flash exposure to long-exposure landscapes to low-light street photography — becomes a variation on the same three dials you already understand. That's what makes this the single most valuable concept to learn early, and why it's worth revisiting until it feels completely automatic.
