Indoor Photography Lighting: Working With (and Around) Difficult Conditions

Mixed light sources, dim rooms, and awkward colour casts — here's how to handle indoor lighting with confidence.

Indoor photography presents a specific set of lighting challenges that outdoor shooting rarely does: light levels are usually much lower, multiple light sources with different colour temperatures often compete within the same room, and you typically have far less control over your environment than in a planned outdoor session. Understanding how to read and work with these conditions turns indoor photography from a frustrating guessing game into a genuinely manageable, even enjoyable, part of your practice.

The Core Challenges of Indoor Lighting

Lower Light Levels

Indoor spaces, even well-lit ones, typically provide a fraction of the light available outdoors on an overcast day, let alone in direct sun. Mixed Light Sources

Many indoor spaces combine several different light sources simultaneously — warm tungsten lamps, cooler LED downlights, a window letting in daylight, perhaps a television or phone screen adding its own colour cast. Each of these sources has a different colour temperature, and your camera can only accurately white-balance for one at a time, which is exactly why indoor photos often show an unnatural colour mismatch across different parts of the same frame.

Uneven Light Distribution

Unlike outdoor scenes, where light often falls relatively evenly across a wide area, indoor light frequently varies dramatically over short distances — bright near a window, significantly dimmer just a few metres further into the room. This uneven distribution requires more deliberate subject positioning than most outdoor shooting demands.

Using Window Light Indoors

A window is usually your best and most flattering indoor light source, and positioning your subject relative to it is the single highest-leverage decision you can make for indoor portraits or product photography. Sheer curtains, if available, diffuse harsh direct window light into something considerably softer and more even.

For subjects positioned too far from any window to get sufficient light naturally, consider physically relocating the subject closer to the window, or using a reflector to bounce additional window light back toward them from the opposite side — often more effective, and certainly more natural-looking, than immediately reaching for artificial light.

Working With Existing Artificial Light

When window light isn't available or sufficient, indoor spaces still typically contain usable ambient artificial lighting:

Practical lights as your light source: Table lamps, floor lamps, and even the warm glow of string lights can serve as genuine, atmospheric light sources rather than something to avoid — particularly effective for moody, intimate indoor portraits or food photography where a warm, low-key mood is the goal.

Positioning relative to existing fixtures: Just as with window light, moving your subject closer to or further from an existing lamp or overhead fixture gives you meaningful control over brightness and shadow without adding any new equipment.

Turning off competing light sources: If a room contains multiple mismatched colour-temperature sources, sometimes the simplest fix is turning off all but one — relying on a single consistent light source (even if dimmer) often produces a more coherent, professional-looking result than a technically brighter but colour-inconsistent mix.

Adding Your Own Light: LED Panels and Portable Lighting

For more control than ambient indoor lighting alone provides, a small, affordable LED panel light is one of the most practical additions to an indoor photography kit. Unlike flash, continuous LED lighting lets you see the lighting effect in real time before shooting, which is particularly valuable for beginners still learning to judge light quality and direction by eye. Many panels offer adjustable colour temperature, letting you match (or deliberately contrast with) existing ambient light in the room.

Position a single LED panel at roughly 45 degrees to your subject, slightly above eye level, for a flattering, directional result similar to classic portrait lighting patterns — far more controllable and consistent than relying on whatever ambient light a room happens to offer.

White Balance Considerations Indoors

Shoot RAW whenever indoor lighting is uncertain or mixed, preserving the flexibility to correct white balance significantly after the fact without visible quality loss.

Take a custom white balance reading using a grey or white card under your actual shooting light, particularly valuable if you're photographing a series of images in the same space.

Match your added light to the dominant ambient source, if you're supplementing with an LED panel or flash, rather than introducing a third competing colour temperature into an already mixed scene.

Camera Settings for Indoor Photography

Aperture: Wide apertures (f/1.8–f/2.8) are often necessary simply to gather enough light in typical indoor conditions, with the added benefit of a pleasantly blurred background that helps a subject stand out from a potentially cluttered indoor environment.

ISO: Expect to shoot at higher ISO values indoors than outdoors — ISO 800–3200 is common in typical indoor lighting, and higher still in dim venues. Shutter speed: Keep shutter speed fast enough to avoid camera shake given your focal length, adjusting ISO upward as needed to maintain this rather than letting shutter speed drop too low.

Autofocus: Indoor low light can cause autofocus hunting; consider using your camera's AF-assist light if available, or manually pre-focusing on a static subject in genuinely dim conditions.

Indoor Photography for Specific Scenarios

Portraits at home: Position your subject near the largest, brightest window available, ideally with the window itself just out of frame to one side, using it as your primary light source and a reflector (or simply a white wall) on the opposite side to fill shadows gently.

Food photography: Overcast, diffused window light from the side (rather than directly overhead or from behind the camera) is widely considered the most flattering light for food, revealing texture without harsh, unappetising shadows.

Events and gatherings: Bounce flash (covered in our flash photography guide) is often the most practical solution for indoor events with limited or inconsistent ambient lighting, providing a controllable, repeatable light source regardless of venue conditions.

Product photography at home: A simple DIY setup using a window for natural side lighting, combined with a white foam board reflector on the opposite side, can produce surprisingly professional-looking product shots without any dedicated studio equipment.

Common Indoor Lighting Mistakes

Positioning a subject with a bright window directly behind them, silhouetting them against the light rather than using it to illuminate their face.

Ignoring mixed colour temperatures, resulting in an unnatural, hard-to-correct colour cast across different parts of the same image.

Relying on overhead ceiling lights as a primary source, which typically cast unflattering downward shadows under eyes and chins.

Being reluctant to raise ISO sufficiently, resulting in underexposed, blurry, or unnecessarily grainy images from an ISO setting kept too conservative for genuinely dim conditions.
