RAW files retain the full, unprocessed colour data captured by the sensor, and white balance can be adjusted after the fact in editing software with essentially no quality loss, since you're not discarding any colour information — you're simply reinterpreting data that's still fully present in the file.
JPEG files, by contrast, "bake in" the white balance decision at the moment of capture, discarding the underlying data needed to correct it cleanly later. White Balance for Common Malaysian Shooting Scenarios
Hawker stalls and night markets: Often lit by a mix of warm bulbs and neon signage — a genuinely tricky mixed-light scenario where a custom white balance reading, or simply shooting RAW and adjusting later, will serve you far better than trusting Auto.
Rainforest and jungle trails: Dense green canopy can trick Auto White Balance into an unwanted colour shift; the Cloudy or Shade preset, or a manual Kelvin value, often renders foliage more naturally.
Beach and island scenes (Redang, for example): Bright, open sky and reflective water are generally well-handled by Auto or the Daylight preset, though shooting in open shade under a beach umbrella may need the Shade preset to avoid an overly blue cast.
Indoor shopping malls and modern architecture: Frequently lit by a mix of LED sources at varying colour temperatures — worth taking a custom white balance reading if you're shooting a series of images in the same space.
Common White Balance Mistakes
Trusting Auto White Balance blindly in mixed lighting, then being surprised by inconsistent colour across a set of photos taken in the same room.
Correcting away golden hour warmth, either through Auto White Balance or an overly clinical manual correction, losing the mood that made the light appealing in the first place.
Shooting JPEG-only in tricky lighting, then discovering the colour cast can't be fully corrected afterward.
