Why your photos keep coming out soft — and how to fix it by choosing the right AF mode.
Few things are more frustrating than reviewing a promising photo only to find your subject's face is soft while the background is razor sharp. More often than not, this isn't bad luck — it's a mismatch between your autofocus settings and the scene in front of you. Understanding how autofocus modes work, and when to use each one, fixes this problem almost entirely.
The Two Layers of Autofocus
Autofocus systems actually involve two separate decisions that beginners often conflate: how the camera focuses (single vs. continuous) and where the camera focuses (which AF area or points it uses). Getting both right, together, is what produces consistently sharp results.
Focus Behaviour: Single vs. Continuous vs. Hybrid
Single AF (AF-S on most brands, One-Shot AF on Canon)
The camera focuses once when you half-press the shutter, then locks — it won't refocus even if your subject moves before you take the shot. This is ideal for stationary subjects: landscapes, posed portraits, product photography, architecture. It's also the mode of choice when you want to focus on one spot and then recompose your frame before shooting, since focus stays locked once achieved.
Continuous AF (AF-C on most brands, AI Servo on Canon)
The camera continuously adjusts focus for as long as you hold the shutter half-pressed, tracking a moving subject in real time. This is essential for anything moving unpredictably: kids running, pets, sports, street photography where subjects walk toward or away from you, wildlife. The trade-off is that continuous AF can occasionally "hunt" or shift focus if it briefly loses track of your subject, particularly in low contrast or low light scenes.
Hybrid/Automatic AF (AF-A on most brands, AI Focus on Canon)
The camera attempts to detect whether your subject is moving and automatically switches between single and continuous behaviour. This sounds convenient, but many experienced photographers avoid it, since the automatic switching can be unpredictable — the camera might guess wrong at exactly the moment it matters. It's a reasonable option while you're still learning the difference between single and continuous, but most photographers eventually move to manually choosing between the two based on the subject.
Focus Area: Where the Camera Looks
Separate from the behaviour setting above, your camera also lets you choose where within the frame it should look for something to focus on:
Single-Point AF
You choose one specific point in the frame, and the camera focuses exactly there, ignoring everything else. This gives you maximum precision and control — essential for portraits, where you want focus locked precisely on an eye, not "somewhere on the face" or worse, the nose or ear. The trade-off is speed: manually moving a single point around the frame takes more time than letting the camera choose automatically, which can cost you a fast-moving moment.
Zone AF
The camera selects the sharpest subject within a defined cluster of points rather than a single exact spot, giving a balance between precision and flexibility. Useful for moderately unpredictable subjects — a child playing within a general area, a pet moving around a room — where you don't have time to track a single point precisely but still want more control than leaving the whole frame open.
Wide/Auto-Area AF
The camera scans the entire frame and decides what to focus on itself, often prioritising the closest or most prominent subject, or a detected face/eye. This is fast and convenient but can occasionally focus on the wrong element entirely, particularly in busy or cluttered scenes with multiple potential subjects.
Eye AF / Face Detection
Many modern mirrorless cameras include dedicated eye and face detection, which actively identifies and tracks a human (or in many cases, animal) eye across the frame, adjusting focus continuously even as the subject moves. For portrait and candid photography involving people, this has become one of the single most valuable autofocus advances in recent years — it dramatically reduces missed-focus shots on moving subjects, and is worth enabling by default whenever you're photographing people.
Matching AF Mode to Your Subject
Posed portraits, landscapes, still life, architecture → Single AF + Single-point (or Eye AF for portraits)
Kids, pets, unpredictable movement in a defined area → Continuous AF + Zone AF
Street photography, walking subjects, candid moments → Continuous AF + Wide-area or Zone AF, or pre-focused single-point (see below)
Sports, wildlife, fast unpredictable motion → Continuous AF + Zone or subject-tracking AF, high burst rate
Macro photography → Single AF + Single-point, often supplemented by manual focus fine-tuning, since depth of field is so shallow that autofocus can struggle to land precisely
Back-Button Focus: A Technique Worth Learning
By default, most cameras trigger both focus and the shutter release when you press the shutter button — a half-press focuses, a full press fires. Back-button focus separates these two actions: you assign autofocus to a separate button (usually on the back of the camera, hence the name), while the shutter button only fires the shot, no longer refocusing each time.
This unlocks a genuinely useful technique: focus once using the back button, release it, and now your focus stays locked exactly where you set it — even in continuous AF mode — no matter how many times you press the shutter, until you press the back-focus button again. This is particularly valuable for pre-focusing on a spot (a doorway, a specific tile on the ground) and waiting for a subject to walk into that zone, a common technique in street and candid photography, since it removes any risk of the camera refocusing at the exact wrong moment.
Pre-Focusing for Candid and Street Photography
Speaking of which — many candid and street photographers rely on a specific technique: identify a spot with interesting light, texture, or framing, manually or single-point focus on that exact spot, then simply wait for a compelling subject to walk into it before firing the shutter. Since focus is already locked, there's no autofocus lag or hunting to worry about at the critical moment — you're simply waiting and reacting. This technique, sometimes called "zone focusing" when combined with a narrower aperture for extra depth-of-field forgiveness, is a favourite for fast, unobtrusive street shooting.
Troubleshooting Focus Hunting
If your autofocus repeatedly struggles to lock on, a few common causes and fixes:
Low contrast subjects: A plain wall, a foggy scene, or a subject with little texture gives autofocus systems little to grab onto. Try focusing on a higher-contrast edge nearby at the same distance, then recompose.
Low light: Autofocus systems need some light to detect contrast and lock focus. In very dim conditions, consider using your camera's AF-assist light if available, switching to manual focus, or focusing on a brighter part of the scene at a similar distance.
Focusing through glass or fine obstructions: Shooting through a window, fence, or foliage can cause the camera to focus on the obstruction rather than your intended subject. Switching to single-point AF placed precisely on your subject, or using manual focus, usually resolves this.
Backlit subjects: A subject with bright light directly behind them can confuse both exposure metering and autofocus. Spot metering combined with single-point AF placed directly on the subject typically helps.
When to Switch to Manual Focus
Autofocus has become remarkably reliable, but manual focus still earns its place in specific situations: macro photography with extremely shallow depth of field, low-contrast or low-light scenes where autofocus repeatedly hunts, video work requiring smooth, deliberate focus pulls, and certain astrophotography situations where focusing precisely on distant stars exceeds what autofocus systems reliably achieve. Most lenses allow quick switching between auto and manual focus, so it's worth practicing manual focus occasionally even if you rarely need it, so the technique is available when a situation calls for it.
Common Autofocus Mistakes
Leaving AF area set to "wide/auto" for portraits, letting the camera guess which face or point to focus on rather than choosing precisely.
Using Single AF for moving subjects, resulting in focus locked on the wrong distance the instant your subject shifts before you shoot.
Forgetting to switch back to continuous AF after a still-subject shoot, then missing action shots later in the same outing.
Recomposing after focus lock in continuous AF mode without back-button focus, unintentionally causing the camera to refocus on something else in the frame.
Bringing It Together
Autofocus isn't a single setting — it's a combination of how your camera focuses and where it looks, and matching both to your subject is what produces consistently sharp results. Spend a session deliberately practicing with each combination — single-point with Single AF on a still subject, then Zone AF with Continuous AF on someone walking toward you — until choosing the right setup becomes an instinct rather than a decision you have to think through mid-shot. That instinct is exactly what separates photographers who consistently nail focus from those left wondering why so many otherwise-great shots came out just slightly soft.
